Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome is a very common eye condition, with 1 in every 10  people affected. It occurs when there is not enough lubrication to the ocular surface or poor tear quality and can cause extensive symptoms such as the following:

  • blurry vision
  • sore eyes
  • tired eyes
  • dry sensation
  • gritty sensation
  • feeling like there’s something in your eye
  • red eyes
  • poor focusing
  • the sensation of heavy eyes
  • watery eyes

It is more prevalent with age and factors may exacerbate it such as:

  • medications
  • autoimmune conditions
  • smoking
  • dry, hot or windy climates
  • certain medical conditions or eye diseases
  • contact lens wear
  • computer work

There are many tests to diagnose dry eye and many options for management depending on what type you may be diagnosed with. Unfortunately dry eye is commonly a long term condition so it may not be cured but can be effectively managed.
