Dr. Hakki Semerli is a Melbourne-trained comprehensive eye surgeon with expertise in cataract surgery using the latest minimally invasive techniques and intraocular lens solutions. He is also highly experienced with microscopic sutureless pterygium surgery and eyelid procedures amongst other surgical procedures.
After completing his ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in 2010, Dr. Semerli dedicated over a year to providing vital eye care to remote Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, addressing advanced and often complex cataracts and other eye health issues.
On returning to Melbourne, he joined the Northern Health Ophthalmology unit, where he played a key role in establishing a public eye service for Melbourne’s northern suburbs and served as Acting Head of Ophthalmology before transitioning to private practice.
Driven by a patient-focused approach and enjoying working with diverse communities, Dr. Semerli founded Specialist Eye Surgeons across two locations before consolidating his busy practices into Moonee Ponds to deliver comprehensive ophthalmic care to the local community and beyond.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Semerli is a senior consultant on the Surgical Ophthalmology Service at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital which is predominantly focused on cataract surgery, where he continues to teach and support trainee ophthalmologists.
Outside of work, he enjoys regular exercise, traveling and is an advanced recreational & rescue scuba diver. As of 2024-25 he is authoring a textbook on cataract surgery techniques to help further eye surgery knowledge for the benefit of surgical trainees and patients needing cataract surgery.
Dr Mei Hong Tan (MB ChB – PhD – FRCOphth – FRANZCO) is an Associate Ophthalmologist at Specialist Eye Surgeons and a Consultant Ophthalmologist in medical and surgical retina at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Dr Tan graduated with honors in medicine and completed her ophthalmology training in Oxford, UK at the Oxford Eye Hospital and John Radcliffe Hospital.
In 2012, she underwent fellowship training in medical retina and vitreo-retinal surgery. She is fully trained in the diagnosis, management and surgical treatment of retinal diseases and has experience in uveitis and ocular oncology. She has performed over 800 vitreo-retinal procedures, including retinal detachment repair, macula hole surgery, vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane, complicated diabetic delamination, subretinal displacement of macula haemorrhage, lens/IOL retrieval and exchange and regularly performs complex operations.
Dr Tan primarily enjoys treating and taking care of patients, and places importance in taking the time to engage patients on a personal level to help them to understand their condition. Clinics and research aside, she enjoys long distance running, snowboarding and taekwondo.
